Edwin Van Der Sar to retire at the end of the season

United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will hang up his gloves at the end of this season.

The 40-year-old former Netherlands international joined United from Fulham in 2005 and has made 245 appearances for the Old Trafford club, winning three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League crown. Van der Sar's wife fell seriously ill in December 2009.

"I cannot really identify a time when it [the decision] happened," said Van der Sar. "Let's just say that it was playing on my mind from the moment Annemarie had her stroke.

"She has fought back from it. We decided on another year in England and thus to stay at Manchester United.

"But, once engaged in the season, the thought of saying goodbye started to gnaw a bit more emphatically."

 

1970: Born Voorhout, Holland, October 29.

1990: Makes debut for Ajax, having come through the club's youth system.

1992: Wins UEFA Cup with Ajax.

1994: Wins first Dutch title with Ajax.

1995: Plays key role as Ajax win Champions League, beating AC Milan in final.

Also wins Super Cup and Dutch League. Named Europe's Best Goalkeeper by UEFA.

1998: Ajax win league title again, van der Sar capping another season of success with a penalty in 8-1 drubbing of De Graafschap in penultimate match.

Van der Sar helps Holland to World Cup semi-final where they are beaten by Brazil on penalties.

1999: After winning a host of honours with Ajax - who finish a disappointing sixth in the Dutch championship - completes move to Juventus, becoming the first non-Italian goalkeeper in the club's history.

2000: Makes 32 appearances for Juve but a last-match defeat costs them the title as Lazio pip them at the post.

Holland are beaten by Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2000.

2001: Juventus finish runners-up in Serie A.

July 31 - Signs four-year contract with Premiership newcomers Fulham.

2005: January 25 - Extends contract with Fulham until the summer of 2006.

June 5 - Manchester United reach agreement with Fulham, signing him for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £7million.

2006: World Cup campaign with Holland ends in second round as they lose 1-0 to Portugal.

2007: May - United's attempt to end season with silverware ends as Didier Drogba scores the only goal in extra-time to win the FA Cup for Chelsea.

August - Makes three saves to give United a Community Shield penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea.

2008: United win Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow, with Van der Sar making the decisive save in a penalty shoot-out to deny Nicolas Anelka.

2009: Sets record of 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal in the Premier League.

United lose Champions League final to Barcelona but Van der Sar wins UEFA's Best Goalkeeper award for the second time.

2010: January 27 - Announces retirement at end of current season.

Chicharito’s Impact Thus Far

Since I posed the question in one of the posts yesterday, I was curious to determine how much of an impact Chicharito has had in terms of points won so far this season. 

Clearly, his impact is more than just goals and assists. But the intangibles are obviously more difficult to really measure. For the purpose of this exercise, I just went with a simplistic approach looking solely at the goals/assists stat and figuring out how many points he has won us because he scored/assisted. 

For instance, in the game against Stoke on Jan 4th that we won 2-1, he recorded a goal and an assist. I credit him with earning us the 3 points since his goal would have at least earned us a point while his assist got us another goal and thus, all 3 points. Read more..

Bolton Wanderers vs. Manchester United - Preview

Manchester United Alex Ferguson will be looking to ring the changes again as the Premier League title-chasing Reds on Sunday. After winning a Carling Cup fixture Scunthorpe, United will be looking to their winning ways continue. Standing between their goal of a victory Bolton Wanderers.

The Wanderers have a decent start to the season and will go stiff, especially with Manchester United at the Reebok Stadium. This Bolton side is very different than those played at the Reebok over the years. Ridiculed for their boring, functional and direct style of football under the guidance of Sam Allardyce, they have a long way to improve their style. The main reason for this change is the installation of Owen Coyle as their boss. The former Burnley manager has instilled a confidence to the ball along the ground and please triangles to create opposition to circumvent rather than just hoof the ball to Kevin Davies. The style is not the night come and even now it is a work in progress. Coyle's insistence in playing a certain style applause and his successes on the field too.

It is because of this change in style that players like the lucrative Swede Johan Elmander have the form at the club improved. Martin Petrov, the Bulgarian high-flying also joined the club in the summer in what could prove the bargain of the season.

Coyle is expected to be available again after an accident strongest side in the Carling Cup in midweek, where they slumped to a defeat. Their defeat, ironically, came into the hands of the former club Coyle, Burnley, which he in this bitter fashion. The key question for this contest will be whether Coyle recalls after the Finn Jussi Jaaskelainen returns from suspension. In his absence, stand-keeper, Adam Bogdan is in very impressive form, but it will probably not surprise as the outstanding Finn takes his place back in the side. Kevin Davies is another side to the return after suspension to spearhead an attack that will be expected to score the goals against a wobbly United Defense offer.

United Ferguson himself will be ringing in the changes and it will not surprise if only Rio Ferdinand takes his place in the side against the Trotters. United have four points behind leaders Chelsea beaten hollow those ominous when power of their opponents so far in the season. However, with the defending champions play against Manchester City, United will have the opportunity to make ground, as the London side slip up. In fact, this is one of the few times that Ferguson would actually support his city rivals in every match.

It is for these reasons that big guns like Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and in-form striker Dimitar Berbatov is expected to return to the side. Despite excellent reputation for United against Bolton could be a potential banana skin in which Alex Ferguson will be looking to avoid. Ferguson will hope that the United defense is stronger this time after the spectacular collapse late in the game against Everton and Liverpool in the mid-game. Ferguson is smart enough to portray their comeback against Liverpool after a defensive lapse as a turning point in the vicinity of a corner.

If United is to keep a clean sheet, they are likely to prevail at the Reebok Stadium. And with important Champions League matches on the horizon, a victory against the Trotters the perfect tonic to keep the momentum going.
