Cantona: Football Is Not For The Rich

Eric Cantona: In the same week that Michel Platini has announced that the cheapest tickets available for the European Cup final will cost £80, Eric Cantona has slammed the current state of football, with the working classes becoming priced out of attending matches.

“What I think is a shame is that people from lower backgrounds can’t afford to go to the stadium anymore,” Cantona told ESPN. “These are the real fans of football.

Man Utd wish list for Maarten Stekelenburg to top target

Maarten Stekelenburg favourite to be United new No1

Maarten Stekelenburg is Man Utd first choice to replace his fellow Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford.

"Stekelenburg is the keeper who is at the top of our wanted list," Muelensteen (united first team coach) told Dutch magazine Voetbal International. 'We talk a lot among ourselves about who should replace Van der Sar. Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin.'

United have also looked at two highly regarded keepers, Atletico Madrid's 20-year-old David de Gea and Sporting Lisbon's Rui Patricio, 22. Stekelenburg is far more experienced, having played in last summer's World Cup final.

In a tense, often attritional game between two sides brimming with attacking talent and intent, mutual respect won out as both sides harried and hassled each other into submission - though United had to play out the final 16 minutes with 10 men, after the dismissal of Rafael for two bookings.

Man Utd striker Federico "Kiko" Macheda made first debut by Sampdoria

Manchester United striker Kiko Macheda was handed a Serie A debut by Sampdoria coach Mimmo di Carlo in yesterday's 2-1 win over AS Roma.

Federico Macheda came off the bench in the 78th minute with the scores locked at 1-1 and nearly made an instant impact with a header that went narrowly wide. That miss was negated, however, when Macheda played a part in teeing up Stefano Guberti's late winner for the hosts.
